El insecto es originario del sudeste asiático y su picadura puede atravesar con facilidad la ropa.
Una nueva alerta se ha generado en algunos países europeos, especialmente España, ante la llegada y expansión del Mosquito Tigre. Este insecto de color negro o café y algunas rayas plateadas en su torax, y originario del sudeste asiático habría colonizado según los expertos, todos los continentes de la tierra con excepción de la Antartida.
Entre sus características se encuentra que es cuatro veces más grande que el mosquito tradicional y según expertos entrevistados por el diario británico The Sun, la picadura podría atravesar la ropa. El riesgo que representa es el de su capacidad de transmitir algunas enfermedades típicas del trópico como el Dengue, el Zika o el Chikungunya.
Según afirman, fue visto especialmente en ambientes húmedos como Ibiza, España, en donde por estas épocas ronda las piscinas ante la ausencia de turistas. Sus crías tardan entre 10-12 días en gestarse y la cuarentena habría propiciado una rápida expansión del insecto.
